How do I fix the many 404 errors that I see in Google Search Console?

404 errors refer to pages that no longer exist. If Google is showing many of such errors, then they may be caused by external sites or even Google itself linking to those old pages.

It’s a good idea to create redirects for pages before unpublishing / deleting / or renaming their urls so you don’t lose the traffic that may be coming to you from that old link being on 3rd party sites.

To do so, set the 404 page as the “source” and a new page (that has similar / related content) as the “target”.
